The Specimen Processing Services Specialist I promotes and maintains effective and professional communication with patients, clients, co-workers and SCCA colleagues. The Tech works efficiently to minimize patient wait times, performs specimen processing of blood specimens/venipuncture phlebotomy. Responsibilities may include transfusion support duties. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities. The specialist may be asked to cover alternative shifts or weekends as needed per staffing.
Responsibilities
- Promotes and maintain effective and professional communication with patients, clients, co-workers and SCCA colleagues
- Performs specimen processing of blood specimens
- Performs venipuncture phlebotomy
- Processes specimens including centrifugation, aliquoting and dispensing specimens to proper lab processing and send out sites
- Works efficiently to minimize patient wait times
- Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance programs and projects
- Records variances of standard policies and procedures in Patient Safety Net accurately and where required
- Attendance & punctuality: is prompt for work and seeks support and guidance if needed regarding absenteeism
- May include Patient Service Representative duties
- Proficient in the use of email, and data entry in a Windows-based environment
Qualifications
Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing workloads
- Ability to problem solve
- Proficient in the use of email, and data entry in a Windows-based environment
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS)
- Completion of phlebotomy training course
- Washington state MA/Phlebotomist certification (or sponsored by SCCA if competency assessment and training are completed).
- Previous experience in clinical laboratory setting
- Specimen handling and processing experience including accessioning, centrifuge, aliquoting, send outs and blood banking
- Experience with EPIC/Cadence, answering phones/handling phone inquiries from patients and staff
SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
Exceptions exist only for employees whose positions are fully remote, with no required access to campus. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees requiring access to campus must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
