Summary of Duties:
The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) seeks to fill a clinical, full-time, 12-month, renewable position within the Emergency and Critical Care section of its Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The position is available at all ranks (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor), depending upon qualifications, and is available immediately. This position will join a team of three (3) faculty clinicians whose primary mission is clinical teaching, clinical service and scholarship in a critical unit experiencing growth opportunities.
For those with interest in a tenure-track opprotunities, depending upon research background and experience, there may be an opportunity to negotiate conversion to a tenure-track position within three (3) years in rank, subject to university policy.
The successful applicant will have responsibility for participation in clinical service; clinical, laboratory, and didactic (classroom) teaching of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students; will provide health care and service to patients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital; will advise and consult with referring veterinarians and clients; will develop a creative, independent and/or collaborative research program in an area related to Emergency and Critical Care; will be in direct support of an Emergency and Critical Care residency program; and will provide leadership in directing research projects for residents and graduate students. The successful applicant must be able to communicate effectively, work collegially, and collaborate with diverse internal and external constituencies.

Candidates must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or a related foreign equivalent degree (such as a BVSc), and be board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or will have completed an ACVECC residency training program by time of hire.
Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Veterinary Science or related field, a record of scholarly productivity, evidence of expertise in teaching, and evidence of accomplishments that demonstrates the potential to become an outstanding scholar and educator.
The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care service is currently staffed with 2 boarded criticalists (another is joining the team in January 2021), 1 boarded surgeon, an emergency veterinarian, ECC residents, ECC interns, veterinary technician supervisor, licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary technician assistants, and patient service coordinators. The unit's strategic plan includes expansion of all levels of staffing to facilitate operation of parallel critical care and emergency services. State-of-the-art equipment and facilities are currently available within the service and hospital and include the capability for long term mechanical ventilation, point-of-care ultrasound, multi-parameter monitoring system, in-house laboratories, thromboelastography (TEG), on-site blood bank, digital radiography, 3T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, computed tomography (CT), and electrodiagnostic equipment. Endoscopy, bronchoscopy, laparoscopy, and arthroscopy are also available. Our surgical facility is equipped with a full range of surgical equipment including an operating microscope, a stereotactic brain biopsy system, and a Nico Myraid for tumor resection. WSU is recognized nationally and internationally for transsphenoidal hypophysectomy and currently has an active Pituitary Surgical Team and provides a unique opportunity to care for these patients in our ICU. The physical rehabilitation facility is equipped with an underwater treadmill, electric muscle stimulator and therapeutic ultrasound and is under the supervision of a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner. In addition, the hospital functions as a regional tertiary care facility and provides the Emergency and Critical Care service with a broad-based caseload.
The mission of VCS is to serve the community through education and through generation and dissemination of new information, for the benefit of animal and human health and well-being. The WSU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/, is organized into five departments, including VCS, Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP), Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN), the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB), and the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health each dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and service. The CVM and VCS faculty have research strengths in infectious diseases, pain management, and neuroscience. A core clinical research group in pharmacogenomics has been recently identified as a research focus within VCS with the strategic plan to expand this into a generalized clinical focus in individualized medicine. This will provide diverse research opportunities for the applicant interested in genetic relationships to disease.
