Our Mission Statement:
West Sound Academy is a college preparatory school that graduates accomplished, creative, intellectually curious young adults prepared to contribute responsibly to the world.
West Sound Academy is a globally recognized International Baccalaureate school that provides an exceptional educational and social experience for youth through a rigorous curriculum and nurturing environment, innovatively utilizing fine arts and sciences as a catalyst to foster high academic achievement.
The Head of School is the sole employee of the Board of Trustees. The Head of School shall:
Be a member ex officio of all standing committees of the Board
Be the representative of the Board of Trustees in its relations with all constituents
Select and hire properly qualified persons to serve as members of the faculty and administration and consultants, as needed
Have direct supervision of the faculty and staff and coordinate the activities of the entire organization.
Hold regular meetings of the faculty and staff and see that the general policies of the Board are understood and followed
General duties of the Head of School include (but are not restricted to) the following:
To embody, manifest, and advocate the mission of the school
To articulate the vision for the school and its future
To monitor and address all matters of school climate and culture
To manage the sometimes-competing demands of the various constituencies of the school
To provide to the Board of Trustees with data analysis, scenarios and possibilities for the Board to consider as it does its work focusing on the strategic future of the school
To work with the Board of Trustees, its Chair, and its committees in carrying out established school policies; to review those policies and make recommendations for changes; to attend meetings, prepare reports, maintain board records, and keep trustees informed on all aspects of the school’s operation
To serve as a member of Board Strategic committees
To facilitate the governance of the Board in collaboration with the Executive Committee
Finance & Operations Duties:
The Head of School directs all aspects of the school’s finances and operations, including budgeting, reporting, and banking.
The Head of School directs the academic programs of the school in collaboration with the Associate Head of School. This includes preparing for and conducting periodic program changes made by the International Baccalaureate Programme in collaboration with the Associate Head of School, and ensuring coverage of teaching responsibilities by qualified faculty.
The Head of School directs all aspects of the school's development and advancement. This includes steering marketing activities to maintain/grow enrollment, admissions, fundraising, alumni relations, and acting as a liaison with the parent community.
Commitment to Care (C2C) aka Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Duties:
The Head of School shall promote a culture of anti-racism, open-mindedness, caring and accessibility throughout all operations of the school. The Head of School serves as a member of the Commitment to Care committee and implements appropriate recommendations that sustain the school’s ongoing commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
The Head of School oversees the community and leads conflict resolution with all constituents. This includes supervising the Director of Admissions for enrollment management and ensuring the enrollment of international students, supervising marketing, working with senior admin on community building, and representing the school to all its constituents including the neighborhood, parents, students, alumni, business community, faculty, and staff.
