The Horwitz Lab in the UW Department of Physiology & Biophysics has an excellent opportunity for a Research Scientist 1.
Training Animals (30%): •Train non-human primates (NHPs) by monitoring their performance, adjusting task difficult, and providing food and juice rewards to reinforced desired behavior. •Calibrate eye position monitoring devices. •Coordinate simultaneous processes on three computers to implement behavioral testing. •Store data to computer disk for offline analysis. •Analyze NHP behavioral data to monitor progress across training sessions.
Animal Care Duties (30%): •Clean NHP recording chambers. •Monitor and record animal weights and water consumption. •Provide excellent animal care through monitoring and addressing nutrition, housing, and medical issues. •Provide water and treats to NHPs on occasional weekends (rotating schedule with other personnel). •Assist clinical staff with general medical care for the animals in the lab.
Laboratory Maintenance (30%): •Prepare weekend water sheets. •Clean laboratory, recording booths and NHP chairs. •Clean glassware. •Restock supplies. •Prepare swab packs for chamber cleaning. •Prepare pipette tip boxes. •Autoclave water, buffers, pipette tips, tubes, and instruments. •Check eye wash stations. •Communicate with IACUC and bioengineering staff to achieve lab goals.
Other Duties (10%): •Identify expired materials and discard them in accordance with UW policies. •Assist with data processing duties. •Assist with cleaning duties. •Pick up and drop off items at Surplus Property, Surgery, Shipping and Receiving, and Drug Services. •Stay current on all required training. •Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS •Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, animal science, or related field. •At least one year of experience working with laboratory animals.
Additional requirements: •Strong technical skills are essential in order to understand and follow specific protocols. •This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills as the employee will be interacting closely with the clinical staff, animal husbandry staff, and research staff. •Ability to work independently and collaborate with a diverse group of people. •Ability to understand and follow established experimental protocols. •Ability to collect data in a consistent and reliable manner. •Ability to assist clinical staff with animal care. •Understanding of sanitary practices and safety procedures to keep animals healthy and employees safe.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS •Able to identify equipment failures and able to work with the supervisor to repair broken equipment. •Experience with statistical analysis of data. •Familiarity with sterile techniques. •Cell cultures or molecular biology techniques.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT •Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. •Ability to work a flexible schedule with occasional work outside regular business hours and/or on weekends. •Willingness and ability to work with non-human primates and potentially other animals in an animal research setting. Depending on the situation, an animal allergy may be a challenge for the employee performing the work. •Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. •This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility may be required. •Must be able to carry out duties that involve handling controlled substances.
