The Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) is responsible for the strategic and tactical management of finance and accounting, human resources, facilities and technology. The DFO is responsible for ensuring the long-term financial health and viability of The Little School and is a key member and strategic partner of the school’s leadership team and Board of Trustees. The DFO reports directly to the Head of School and works with the Head as principal decision makers for the school’s financial affairs. The DFO serves on various board committees, including but not limited to the Finance Committee.
Oversees all areas of the accounting function to include accounts payable and accounts receivable, and ensures accuracy, timeliness and compliance with internal controls.
Supervises payroll function, and ensures accuracy and timeliness.
Reconciles all bank statements monthly and reviews statements with Head of School.
Manages cash flow and allocations between investment and operating accounts.
Prepares financial reports monthly for review with Head and Finance Committee.
Prepares quarterly reports as required by loan covenants and within loan covenant deadlines.
Oversees and is responsible for all required reporting.
Oversees construction budget and construction loan draws, in collaboration with owner’s project representative and Head.
Responsible for preparing and maintaining the annual budget in close partnership with school leadership and presenting the budget to the Finance Committee for approval.
Regularly maintains reporting of the full statement of operations against the budget for the Head of School and the Board of Trustees.
Works with the school leadership, the board finance committee and other committees as appropriate on strategic planning.
Manages the classification and reclassification between restricted and unrestricted asset accounts.
Responsible for successful, timely and accurate completion of required IRS forms 990 and 5500.
Responsible for annual independent audit, and addresses any findings.
Files all forms, renews various memberships and ensures correct registration with all regulatory bodies.
Responsible for successful and timely administration of human resources activities.
Maintains personnel files and manages employment agreements.
Works with Head of School on matters of staff compensation and evaluation of benefits renewals.
Maintains the employee handbook.
Onboards new employees.
Ensures compliance with, and communicates changes to, employment and health and safety laws.
Works with commercial insurance broker to maintain appropriate and cost-effective insurance coverage of the school, its properties and people.
Oversees Technology Manager and Director of Facilities to ensure that effective security and safety protocols are maintained and executed effectively, both for the physical buildings and technology and data assets of the school.
Direct supervisor of Bookkeeper, Director of Facilities and Technology Manager.

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or a related field.
MBA, MPA and/or 10+ years in financial leadership roles.
Previous experience in accounting for a non-profit.
Experience supporting fundraising activities.
Experience working with commercial banks and loan operations.
Previous supervisory experience.
Strong accounting knowledge, particularly the nuances of non-profit accounting.
Detail oriented and persistent.
Willing and able to attend to the tactical details of daily management, as well as engage in forward thinking ideation and strategic planning.
Strong MS Excel skills.
Experience with SAGE software and MIP is a plus.
Highly collaborative and communicative; ready to share ideas, challenge ideas and support sound decision making.
Ability to do complicated ad-hoc analysis of multiple scenarios/decisions.
